Materials for special needs, 2001

Children with special needs are at a disadvantage in being able to use the environment as a learning resource. Learning materials can play an important role in teaching them concepts through concrete and multi-sensorial channels. To serve children with special needs better, in 2001 Sutradhar organised a consultation with 15 special educators to understand the different disabilities and specific needs of those who work in this area.

Materials for special needs are often not manufactured commercially since demand is limited. The materials that Sutradhar developed in response to the needs assessment were – family puppets for play therapy, movement props, texture cards, black and white mobiles, activity quilts, Chinese sticks, yo-yos, shape beads, and single colour-graded beads for assessment.
