The Association for Social Alternatives and Rural Empowerment (ASARE) is a non-governmental organization founded in 1992.  As a society, it works at the regional level in the Kanakpura area of Bangalore rural district.  Supported by the Karnataka State Department of Women and Child Development, ASARE runs three day-care centers or Shishupalana Kendras for children, 0-3 years. All three centers are located in Harohalli hobli.  Each center has 25 children who are provided with nutritional food, health care and an introduction to learning.  ASARE’s key focus areas are pre- and post-natal care, the importance of breast-feeding and the over all personality development of children.  These issues are discussed during the mothers’ meetings held in each center once in three months.

During 1996-2001, ASARE ran 16 pre-school centers for children, 1-6 years. Totally, 1440 children from 16 villages benefited from the programme.  It also conducted regular health camps once in six months for women and children.  With a staff of 20, it plans to continue running crèches.  For this it would welcome help in the form of play and educational material kits appropriate for children below three years.
