The Bala Mandir Research foundation - Chennai, an NGO, extended its work to Karnataka in 2002. It primarily works in the area of parenting and early childhood. The key focus areas of BMRF-KN include:

• Care during pregnancy
• Nutrition and hygiene
• Early intervention
• Brain development in young children
• Importance of family environment in early years
• Stimulation and learning through play

For training, BMRF has a specially designed calendar on effective parenting skills. They have trained 12 NGOs in Bangalore on the ‘Joys of Parenting’, a programme for parents of children under six years. BMRF is also a member of the Network for Information on Parenting, and advocates for child rights. In the future, BMRF plans to reach out to a wider range of people, which would include kindergarten school teachers, anganwadi workers, pregnant women and mothers in hospitals, parents in rural areas, and youth in community.
